Immediate effects of walking training with Honda Walking Assist Device on gait parameters of Parkinson’s disease

Objective: To verify the immediate effects of walking training with Honda Walking Assist Device (HWAD: Honda Motor Co., Ltd, Japan) on gait parameters in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients.

Background: Some previous studies have demonstrated that gait parameters and freezing improve by robotic walking training in PD patients. However, there are few reports about the effects of walking training with wearable exoskeletal walking assist device in PD patients.

Methods: The subjects were PD patients able to walk without assistance. All patients performed walking training with HWAD for 20 minutes. Gait parameters were evaluated immediately before and after walking training using an instrumented walkway system (Walk Way MW-1000: Anima, Japan). Gait parameters before and after walking training were compared using a paired t-test.

Results: Nine PD patients ( mean age: 73.1y, median Hoehn& Yahr stage: 3 ) were included in this study. After the walking training, gait speed (98.2 to 108.2cm/s) and stride length (82.8 to 90.4cm) were both significantly improved.

Conclusions: These findings suggest that walking training with HWAD could immediately improve gait parameters in PD patients.
