Chronological view of peak and diphasic dyskinesia, wearing off and freezing in Parkinson’s disease: 1212 Korean population

Objective: To evaluate the gross chronological trend of 4 motor complications – peak dose dyskinesia, diphasic dyskinesia, wearing off and freezing.

Background: Dyskinesia, wearing off and freezing are troublesome complications disturbing quality of life in the course of Parkinson’s disease (PD). This study evaluated the gross chronological trend of 4 motor complications in a large PD patients group with stratification of age at PD onset.

Methods: Motor complications of 1212 Korean PD patients were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards models.

Results: Peak dose dyskinesia and wearing off are first appearing motor complications and showed similar chronological trend with the PD duration, while diphasic dyskinesia or freezing developed in the later period and showed distinguishing inclination (p <.001). Younger age at onset predicts earlier appearance of peak dose dyskinesia, diphasic dyskinesia and wearing off, meanwhile older age at onset was a predictor for freezing.

Conclusions: This study may help realize chronological trend of motor complications of PD at a glance.
