Potential Diagnosis Biomarks in Serum Biochemical items of Vascular Parkinsonism Patients

Objective: Evaluating the serum biochemical items for diagnosis of vascular parkinsonism.

Background: Currently, the most effective diagnostic methods for VP are mainly based on clinical symptoms. However, this method does not ensure the resulting homogeneity; in addition, this methods is subjective and obscure. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop new and more accurate approaches for VP.

Method: The study was conducted in 62 patients with VP, 57 patients with PD and 35 subjects with health control. The demographic information and serum biochemical examination of the three groups were collected.

Results: There was no significant difference in blood glucose, TG, urea acid and vitamin B12 among the three groups (P > 0.05). There was significant difference in age, gender, homocysteine (Hcy), folic acid, TC, HDL-C and LDL-C among the three groups (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). Compared with the control group, the age, male proportion and Hcy level of VP group were significantly higher, while folic acid, TC, LDL-C and HDL-C of VP and PD groups were significantly lower (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). Age and high Hcy were the risk factors of VP, and high HDLC was the protective factor of VP. The ROC curve of Hcy level (AUC:0.902 sensitivity 91.7% specificity 86.4%), folic acid combined with level of lipid (AUC:0.828 sensitivity: 70.7% specificity: 87.5%). The accuracy, sensitive and specificity is practicable.

Conclusion: Hcy level, folic acid level combining with blood lipoids may be the potential biomarks of VP.
