Serum level of vitamin D3 in patients with neurodegenerative diseases compared to healthy adults and its correlation with the years spent from the initial diagnosis

Meeting: 2016 International Congress

Abstract Number: 1924

Keywords: Dementia, Neuroprotective agents, Parkinsonism

Session Information

Date: Thursday, June 23, 2016

Session Title: Parkinson's disease: Clinical trials, pharmacology and treatment

Session Time: 12:00pm-1:30pm

Location: Exhibit Hall located in Hall B, Level 2

Objective: Vitamin D is an important factor responsible for many physiologic functions. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased risk of neurodegenerative disease.

Background: The serum concentration of 25(OH)D in Macedonian patients with neurodegenerative diseases (PD &AD) was measured and its relationship with the years spent from the initial diagnosis and difference between the control and patients cohort were evaluated in this study.

Methods: 85 participants were tested, (48,2% male, 51,8% female). Of them 50 were in the patients cohort (40 with PD, 10 with AD) and 35 were in the control cohort. Our patients were from the age 36 to 84 (mean 65,2). Patients with other neurologic disorders, renal, metabolic and endocrine diseases were excluded from the study. Analyses were performed using IBM- SPSS Statistics 23.

Results: A Pearson correlation coefficient was computed to assess the relationship between the serum level of 25[OH]D3 and the years spent from the initial diagnosis. There was a negative correlation between the two variables, r=-0.617, n=50, p=0.01. Significantly more patients with neurodegenerative disease (72%) had insufficient vitamin D than did controls (28.57%). The mean (SD) 25(OH)D concentration in the Patients cohort was significantly lower than in the control cohorts 9.41 [10.04] ng/mL vs 17.06 [10.13] ng/mL.

Conclusions: This report of 25(OH)D concentrations in the patients cohort demonstrates a significantly higher prevalence of hypovitaminosis in the patients cohort vs healthy controls. It also show that there is a negative correlation between the level of 25(OH)D and the years spent from initial diagnosis. These data support a possible role of 25[OH]D3 insufficiency in neurodegenerative diseases.
