Burden of COVID-19 among patients with Parkinson’s disease and associated clinical outcomes: Evidence from a meta-analysis

S. Hussain (Brno, Czech Republic)

Meeting: 2022 International Congress

Abstract Number: 43

Keywords: Parkinson’s, Parkinsonism, Substantia nigra pars compacta(SNpc)

Category: Epidemiology

Objective: To understand the burden of covid-19 among patients with Parkinson’s disease and associated clinical outcomes.

Background: COVID-19 has affected millions of patients around the globe and severely impacted clinical outcomes. Poor clinical outcomes and a high mortality rate were observed in elderly patients [1]. PD is more prevalent in the elderly. So, it is important to understand the impact of COVID-19 on the clinical outcomes in PD patients.

Method: The literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Scopus databases to identify all the potential articles assessing the COVID-19 burden and associated clinical outcomes among PD patients. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Only studies with confirmed COVID-19 (based on RT-PCR) were eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis. The primary outcome was to compute the pooled prevalence of COVID-19 among PD patients. The secondary outcomes were to understand the hospitalization and mortality rate due to COVID-19 in PD patients. Comprehensive meta-analysis software was used for the meta-analysis.

Results: This meta-analysis was based on a total of 1029 COVID-19 PD patients from 20 studies. The pooled prevalence of COVID-19 among PD patients was found to be 25.2% (95% CI: 12.5% to 44.3%). The pooled prevalence of hospitalization among COVID-19 PD patients was found to be 43.7% (95% CI: 32.5% to 55.6%).  Likewise, a high mortality rate was observed in COVID-19 PD patients with a pooled prevalence of 24.6% (95% CI: 19.2% to 31%). In addition to this, no significant difference was observed in mortality and hospitalization rate in COVID-19 patients with and without PD. Subgroup analysis based on gender showed the male population had a significantly higher prevalence, hospitalization, and mortality due to COVID-19 in PD patients (p <0.05).

Conclusion: This meta-analysis found a high prevalence of COVID-19, and high hospitalization and mortality rate in PD patients.
