Session Title: Quality of life/caregiver burden in movement disorders

Objective: To determine the frequent cause of hospitalization among adult patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) in our institution.
Background: Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. Its incidence increases with advancing age. Available data suggest that patients with PD have a significant socioeconomic impact owing partly to increased hospital and drug utilization. As the world wide population is aging, we expect these figures to increase with time. Determining the frequent cause of hospitalization will help us focus on the preventive aspect of care among these patients.
Methods: The study was conducted at Metropolitan Medical Center from December 2010 to December 2012, Patients with PD admitted to our institution were reviewed retrospectively. Demographic data were obtained. The severity of PD was classified according to the Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) staging scale. The reason for hospitalization was noted.
Results: Out of the 47 patient admitted in our institution, 19 (40.7%) were admitted due to pneumonia; 4 (8.5%) were admitted for control of PD symptoms; 4 (8.5%) for dysphagia and 4 (8.5%) for GI obstruction; 3 (6.3%) for skin and soft tissue infection. Other causes of hospitalization include : Trauma (6.3%), electrolyte imbalance, peptic ulcer (4.2%), cerebrovascular (2.1%) and cardiovascular diseases (6.3%)

Conclusions: The reasons for frequent admission to hospital for patients with PD were infectious diseases, trauma, cardiovascular emergencies, cerebrovascular emergencies, gastrointestinal emergencies, and electrolyte disturbances. The H&Y score is not dependent on the emergency admittance or the outcome after discharge from the emergency department. The motor disability by itself cannot predict the whole picture of PD and the systemic complications leading to emergency admittance.
