Gender-age features of autonomic heart rhythm disturbances in Parkinson’s disease patients

Objective: To determine the gender differences and age-dependent features of autonomic heart rhythm disturbances in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD).

Background: Autonomic heart rate failures are common findings in PD patients.

Methods: We examined 102 PD patients (29 men and 22 women) (study group) and 60 volunteers (34 men and 26 women) without any evidences of PD or other acute or chronic neurological disorders (control group) in age group 40-79 years. Inclusion criteria: body mass index (BMI) <30. The research program included analysis of ECG changes.

Results: PD patients were significantly more likely (70.6%) than controls (16.7%) to have all types of heart arythmias (p≤0,001). Bundle branch block (BBB) (34.48% vs18.18%) and sinus arythmias (SA) (27.59% vs 18.18%) were more common in males than in females (p≤0,001). PVCs were more common among females (9.09%) than in males (3.45%). When gender-age analysis performed: BBB were more common in PD males above 49 y/o (27.45%), SA – in PD males above 59 (23, 53%), premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) were more common in PD females under 50 y/o5.88% (p=0,05).

Conclusions: Gender-age differences in the prevalence of heart arythmias in PD patients were identified.
