Objective: Examine patterns in Parkinson’s Disease (PD) mortality by sex and age groups over 50 years old in Brazil, using official data from a 12 year gap.
Background: PD is the second most common cause of neurodegenerative disease and there has been a rising world trend in its incidence. It is known that PD is unusual before the age of 50 and is more prevalent in older age-groups. One of the main prognostic factors of PD is mortality, affected by age and sex. In Brazil, official data regarding age and sex from the IBGE demographic census were available in 2010 and 2022; however, few studies have used them to analyze PD’s mortality behavior in the country.
Method: We retrieved data from the 2010 and 2022 Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) demographic census and from the ICD-10 Mortality Monitoring Panel in the Mortality Information System (SIM) database, which indicated PD related deaths with the ICD 10th Revision G20 code. One author did the data extraction from the databases and mortality calculations in the Windows Excel Software. Two different authors reviewed the mortality indicators. The graphics were generated using the same software. A literature research was conducted in PubMed using the terms “mortality” and “parkinson”.
Results: We encountered a considerable increase in Brazil’s total population, which presentes a 6,5% growth in these 12 years. Furthermore, the population aged 50 or older increased 44,3% and the population aged 80 or older grew 56,3% in the same period. PD total mortality per 100.000 habitants increased from 1,36 in 2010 to 2,77 in 2022, a 103% growth [figure1]. In the analysis of each specific age group, tendencies in mortality remained consistent in both years, growing as the groups age. The mortality rate increased even more in the older groups, from 48,8 deaths per 100.000 habitants to 72,3 [figure2]. When considering sex as a variable, the male population, although smaller in absolute numbers, had more deaths related to PD in all age groups and both years, resulting in a bigger mortality rate than the female population. The difference in mortality rates between sexes enlarges as the population gets older [figure3].
Conclusion: Brazil is experiencing a strong aging in its population and an increase in PD mortality, following the global trend, with sex and age group persistent disparities. These findings are extremely relevant regarding Brazil’s healthcare models and its population well-being.
