Objective: To analyze the impact of anxiety on self-perception of health in patients with Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease Without Dementia.

Background: After depression in Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease Without Dementia (IDPWD), anxiety is the second neurobehavioral disorder with the highest incidence and prevalence in patients diagnosed with this neurodegenerative pathology. The data obtained by different investigations indicate that anxiety has an impact on the self-perception that patients have of their health, generating greater motor fluctuations and emotional complications that have repercussions on their quality of life.

Method: Participants: 50 patients diagnosed with IPDWD were recruited, with a mean age of 64.85 years. We determined the association of anxiety with the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale for (HARS). For self-perception of health we used the General Health Quality GHQ-28 questionnaire, compared with a group of healthy subjects without a diagnosis of IPDWD. Statistical analysis: The Mann-Whitney U test – Spearman’s Rho.

Results: There are significant differences between patients with EPISD and the group of healthy subjects (p<0.000) in all components of the HARS, there are also significant differences between both groups in the score obtained in the GHQ-28 scale (p<0.001). There is a statistically significant negative correlation between the total score obtained from the HARS and the total score of the GHQ-28 (Rho= ,661; p=.001), and in the sections of somatic symptoms (Rho= ,449; p=.001), anxiety insomnia (Rho= ,673; p=.001), social dysfunction (Rho= ,494; p=.001) and depression (Rho= ,340; p= ,015).

Conclusion: Anxiety impacts self-perception of health in patients with IPDWD. It is necessary to establish cognitive rehabilitation plans, and pharmacological and non-pharmacological intervention aimed at improving the quality of life in patients with this type of diagnosis.
