Cross-sectional study: what is the sleep quality, daytime sleepiness and quality of life like of people with parkinson’s disease at different stages of the disease?

G. Leveck, L. Paladini, T. Christinelli, V. Israel (CURITIBA, Brazil)

Meeting: 2024 International Congress

Abstract Number: 535

Keywords: Autonomic dysfunction, Parkinson’s, Rehabilitation

Category: Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, Rehabilitation

Objective: To verify sleep quality, daytime sleepiness and quality of life in the different stages of Parkinson’s disease (PD).

Background: The cholinergic, noradrenergic and serotonergic neurotransmitter systems may also be affected in PD, causing the onset of non-motor symptoms. These may present a faster and higher rate of degeneration in the prodromal period and early stages of PD, with changes in sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, which directly impact the perception of the quality of life of the person with PD.

Method: This was a cross-sectional, quantitative study approved by the Research Ethics Committee under CAEE: 39816320.1.0000.0102. The following instruments were evaluated: Parkinson Disease Sleep Scale (PDSS) (0-150 points, the higher the better the quality of sleep); Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) (0-24 points, >10 points is suggestive of excessive daytime sleepiness); Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) (0-100 points, the lower the score, the better the perception of health). Descriptive statistics were performed using mean and standard deviation.

Results: A total of 39 people with PD participated in the study, both sexes (men = 61.54% and women = 38.46%), with a mean age of 63.8 ± 7.0 years and with Hoehn & Yahr (HY) between 1 and 3. The 10 participants with HY 1 had a mean PDSS of 117.90 ± 17.28; ESS 8.60 ± 4.99 and PDQ-39 14.07 ± 9.44. The 13 participants with HY 2 had a mean PDSS of 108.77 ± 19.64; ESS 9.92 ± 3.84 and PDQ-39 17.67 ± 13.29. Finally, the 16 participants with HY 3 had a mean PDSS score of 98.13 ± 25.79; ESS 11.13 ± 5.81 and PDQ-39 30.49 ± 12.97

Conclusion: The scores of the instruments used allowed the observation that with the advancement of PD staging, the participants tended to worsen sleep quality and daytime sleepiness, directly interfering with quality of life, with the increase in health perception scores in stages 2 and 3.
