Effects of a Aquatic Dual Task Activity Program on the Quality of Life and Activities of Daily Living in Individuals with Parkinson’s Disease

A. Silva, V. Israel (Curitiba, Brazil)

Meeting: 2017 International Congress

Abstract Number: 1352

Keywords: Rehabilitation

Session Information

Date: Thursday, June 8, 2017

Session Title: Parkinson’s Disease: Clinical Trials, Pharmacology And Treatment

Session Time: 1:15pm-2:45pm

Location: Exhibit Hall C

Objective: To verify the effect of an aquatic Dual Task (DT) aquatic exercise program on quality of life (QOL), Activities of Daily Living activities (ADL) of individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD).

Background: PD is a neurodegenerative disease that occurs death of dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra. The main features of the disease are tremor at rest, bradykinesia, rigidity, postural instability. It is known that physical exercise assists in the promotion of functionality, independence and QoL. Individuals with PD have always been discouraged from facing DT situations because of the high risk of falls. However, researches have shown beneficial results of DT training in activities such as gait, balance and mobility of people with PD. Also known are the benefits of practicing water exercises, which modify the exercise environment and stimulate an increase in motor ability, body adjustments and motor management quality.

Methods: To assess QOL, the Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) was used and the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) section II to asses the ADL. A 10-week exercise program was conducted twice a week, 40 minutes each session in a heated pool at 33º C. Pre-intervention evaluations (T0), post-intervention (T1) and 3 months after AV2 (T2).

Results: 24 subjects, 13 from the Experimental Group (EG) and 11 from the Control Group (CG), mean age 63 years (+ -13). When the mean PDQ-39 values were evaluated in the CG, there was a difference between the T1 and T2 periods, with a higher T1 mean (p <0.05). In the EG, there were differences between the T0 and T2 periods, with the highest mean in T0 (p <0.05). Regarding the UPDRS section II (AVD), CG did not present differences (p> 0.05), while the EG had a decrease in T1 and T2 periods (p <0.05) when compared to T0.

Conclusions: The aquatic exercise program of DT promoted improvement of the EG in the variables studied, so the association of the benefits of DT with the aquatic environment constitutes a field to be explored.
