M. Busgopaul (Port Louis, Mauritius)

Meeting: 2022 International Congress

Abstract Number: 28

Keywords: Aging, Dementia, Disease-modifying strategies

Category: Education in Movement Disorders

Objective:
In some families, children never know that their parents or grandparents are affected by the Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Whatever be the way that Movement Disorders (MD) enters a child’s/ young person’s world, there will be questions about the disease and for sure, fears or misinformation that the society needs to address.
Halley Movement Coalition is proposing to embark in the process of guiding young people to recognize the necessity to grasp the basic knowledge and valuable instructions pertaining to MD. Our NGO mission is to advocate that young people becomes proactive about their loved ones. Our objective is to provide an insight on the background of the disease.

Background:
Halley Movement Coalition will lay emphasis on research leading to PD & MD. We believe that through research studies, we are better prepared to devise policies and measures for the protection of the community. Our past research studies have guided us for the need of capacity building of stakeholders working with children & community leaders, and have also contributed towards devising action plans in a preventive way to address current or forthcoming family issues.

Method:
We will disseminate this educational concept and make provision for information and counselling through:
· Online Counselling Service through Helpline Mauritius.
Helpline Mauritius, www.helplinemauritius.org, is a subsidiary organ of our NGO Coalition.
· Advocacy sessions with targeted audience in all regions

Results:
Younger people will be encouraged to adapt to the disease in the different ways and different times
An agreement will be reached to converse in related and positive outcomes pertaining to the disease.
Young ones will be provided with anticipated questions and responses.
The beneficiaries will be taught the way to deal with emotions during their interaction with the elderly diagnosed with the disease.

Conclusion:
Although Parkinson’s disease is believed to affect older people, it can affect people younger people too. To sum up what has been mentioned above and given the fact that every family communicates differently, Halley movement will exceptionally provide related services that help with information on the disease.
