Mitigating The Impact Of Covid-19 On Parkinson’s Disease: Insights From Vaccination Strategies

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the impact of COVID-19 infection on patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD), comparing those who received COVID-19 vaccines and those who did not, considering gender, age, and clinical forms of PD. Additionally, we aimed to determine the average age of patients and the ratio of men to women among PD patients.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the impact of COVID-19 infection on patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD), comparing those who received COVID-19 vaccines and those who did not, considering gender, age, and clinical forms of PD.

Method: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients diagnosed with PD who contracted COVID-19. Medical records were reviewed to determine vaccination status, gender, age, and clinical forms of PD, including tremor-dominant, akinetic-rigid, and mixed types. Patients were categorized into two groups: those who received COVID-19 vaccines and those who did not. Data on symptom severity, hospitalization rates, mortality, and disease progression were collected and analyzed.

Results: Among the PD patients who contracted COVID-19, those who were vaccinated exhibited milder symptoms, lower hospitalization rates, and reduced mortality compared to their unvaccinated counterparts, across different gender (total 38 patients, 23 male and 15 female), age, and clinical forms of PD. The average age of PD patients was calculated to be 67,4±5,06. The ratio of men to women among PD patients was 1,5:1.

Conclusion: This study underscores the importance of COVID-19 vaccination in patients with Parkinson’s disease, regardless of gender, age, or clinical forms. Vaccination appears to mitigate the severity of COVID-19 infection and its impact on PD progression, emphasizing the critical role of vaccination strategies in protecting vulnerable populations against the detrimental effects of COVID-19.
