Meeting: 2017 International Congress

Abstract Number: 644

Keywords: Restless legs syndrome(RLS): Clinical features, Restless legs syndrome(RLS): Etiology and Pathogenesis

Session Information

Date: Tuesday, June 6, 2017

Session Title: Restless Legs Syndrome and Other Sleep Disorders

Session Time: 1:45pm-3:15pm

Location: Exhibit Hall C

Objective: To determine the association between the clinical and paraclinical variables and the restless legs syndrome.

Background: The restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common complication of hemodialyzed patients; nevertheless, the exact underlying cause or causes related to this syndrome is or are unknown. The aim of the present study was to determine an association between some variables and this syndrome.

Methods: Following a cross-sectional study, we conducted a case-control study; cases were defined as patients who met the IRLSSG criteria and controls as those who did not meet them. Categorical variables were compared using the chi-square distribution (χ2) and the numerical variables by the Student’s t-distribution or the Mann–Whitney U test when appropriate.

Results: We included 19 cases with RLS and 86 controls which gave us a case-control ratio of 1:4.5. We found a high prevalence of iron deficiency anemia and uremic pruritus in patients with RLS than the controls with a statistically significant difference (p=0.038 and p=0.039, respectively). It was NOT statistically significant for the rest of the sociodemographic and clinical variables (see Table 1) neither the laboratory parameters (see Table 2).

Conclusions: Hemodialyzed patients with restless legs syndrome presents a higher prevalence of iron deficiency anemia and uremic pruritus than the controls. This study suggests that both entities may play a predominant role in the development of the uremic restless legs syndrome.
