Revitalizing Lives: The Dystonia Care Rehabilitation Program

A. Zawar (Lynnwood, USA)

Meeting: 2024 International Congress

Abstract Number: 525

Keywords: Dystonia: Treatment, Pain, Rapid-onset dystonia-parkinsonism(RDP)

Category: Allied Healthcare Professionals

Objective: The Cervical Dystonia Care Program aims to enhance engagement in task-specific performance, improve quality of life, activity tolerance, and facilitate a return to higher functional activities for individuals with cervical dystonia.

Background: Cervical dystonia presents challenges with patterned muscle contractions, impacting head and neck movements and postures, significantly affecting quality of life. This multimodal program, integrating botox and neuro rehab, effectively addresses functional limitations and non-motor changes, empowering individuals to regain control and improve overall function and well-being.

Method: Delivered virtually in a group setting, the program targets eight newly diagnosed idiopathic cervical dystonia individuals with stable BoNT treatment response and no history of surgical interventions. Over four weeks (twice a week), participants undergo comprehensive neuro training focusing on sensorimotor training and autonomic functions, structured into four phases: Discover and Explore, Imagine and Integrate, Move and Strengthen, and Engage and Thrive. Regular check-ins and community support are integral components.

Results: Participants experience improved self-management of pain symptoms through non-pharmacological approaches, increased confidence and autonomy in pain management, and a gradual return to exercises and life activities. Moreover, they exhibit decreased fear of activity, increased perceived control, and enhanced understanding of pain and its factors.

Conclusion: The Cervical Dystonia Care Program yields significant improvements in quality of life, daily activity engagement, self-efficacy in managing the condition, and reduced dependence on over-the-counter medication for the group of eight individuals.
