Objective: To identify the clinical correlation between neurocognitive functioning in memory and depressive symptomatology in patients with IPDWD, assessed by a new scale (ESDEPARK) that measures depression specifically in patients with this type of motor pathology.
Background: Depression is a neuropsychiatric pathology, characterized by low self-esteem, low frustration tolerance, feelings of worthlessness and irrational ideas or cognitive distortions. Different studies have found that depression impacts the processes of storage, consolidation and recall of information in patients with Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease without Dementia (IPDWD) intervened by Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)
Method: Method: Participants: We recruited 50 patients diagnosed with IPDWD, intervened by DBS, with a mean age of 64.85 years. We determined the association of the cognitive phenotype in memory assessed by the Scale for Outcomes in Parkinson’s Disease Cognition (SCOPA-COG), correlated with the ESDEPARK scale to assess depressive symptomatology, and compared with a group of healthy subjects without a diagnosis of IPDWD. Statistical Analysis: Mann-Whitney U test – Spearman’s Rho.
Results: There are significant differences between patients with IPDWD and the group of healthy subjects (p<0.000) in all memory components of the SCOPA-COG and general cognitive performance. There are significant differences between both groups in the score obtained in the ESDEPARK (p< 0.001). There is a statistically significant negative correlation between the total score obtained from the ESDEPARK and the sections of the SCOPA-COG total score (Rho= -,410; p= ,003) and the memory and learning section (Rho= -,501; p= ,001).
Conclusion: Patients with IPDWD, intervened by DBS present deficits in their domains of storage, consolidation and evocation of information, especially in memory and learning.
