The role of Parkinson Nurses for personalizing care in Parkinson’s Disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Meeting: 2022 International Congress

Abstract Number: 20

Keywords: Parkinsonism

Category: Allied Healthcare Professionals

Objective: To identify the various roles and functions that Parkinson Nurses (PNs) may hold for personalized care of Patients with Parkinson’s (PwPs). Providing a systematic review and meta-analysis of personalized Parkinson’s care models in the literature, this study aims to provide up-to-date concepts of PNs to deliver personalized care.

Background: QoL of people with PwPs is affected by motor and non-motor symptoms that require an individualized care approach [1]. PNs may play a key role in the promotion of tailored care delivery [2].

Method: A systematic literature search (PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO) was conducted. The review consisted a qualitative assessment of articles describing personalized care models involving PNs and was guided by the personalized care management model [3]. We performed a meta-analysis comparing interventions involving PNs with standard care in terms of patient-reported QoL (primary outcome: 39-item Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire).

Results: A total of 27 publications (incl. 6 RCTs) were identified. Qualitative evaluation of the individual care models found that PNs can cover all aspects of personalized care, at expense of considerable heterogeneity across the models. Meta-analysis of the six RCTs showed no improvement in QoL with personalized care models compared with standard care, although a significant heterogeneity between study designs and interventions was found.

Conclusion: Future efforts require clear definitions to align the role and training path for PNs across health systems and care settings, to realize the potential of PNs in care delivery in PD.
