Case report and Literature Review on Atypical Parkinson’s Disease

MJ. Dashdorj (Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia)

Meeting: 2025 International Congress

Keywords: Acetylcholine, Parkinson’s, Progressive supranuclear palsy(PSP)

Category: MSA, PSP, CBS: Pathophysiology / Molecular Mechanisms of Disease

Objective: Atypical parkinsonism is classified as a subgroup of Progressive neurodegenerative diseases, characterized by symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

Background: Progressive supra nuclear palsy of the corpus callosum is the most common form of atypical parkinsonism, accounting for 5% of parkinsonism patients and 0.005% in current studies. The average age of onset of symptoms is 63, and patients live an average of 7 years after diagnosis. Currently, there is no specific treatment for PSP.Symptomatic treatment treatments for symptoms such as abnormal eye movements, depression, and parkinsonism are available, and drugs such as dopamine agonists and dopa decarboxylase inhibitors have been used to treat Parkinson’s symptoms.

Method: We present a case report of a 72-year-old woman with atypical parkinsonism diagnosed based on diagnostic criteria, along with a press review. Because typical parkinsonism has a poor prognosis and short life expectancy. It is important to improve health education in the family about this disease.

Results: Brain MRI findings showed characteristic “Hummingbird sign” and “Mickey mouse sign,” confirming progressive supra-nuclear palsy (PSP). The patient’s family was informed about the disease prognosis.

Conclusion: Discussion and Conclusion

Differentiating Parkinson’s disease from atypical parkinsonism using clinical and imaging-based diagnostics is crucial for prognosis and management. Increasing cases of atypical parkinsonism due to environmental and genetic factors highlight the need for enhanced public health education, improved diagnostics, and genetic research in Mongolia.
