Objective: This study aimed to report the detailed clinical profile of repetitive behaviours in adult patients with neurological disorders.
Background: Repetitive behaviours are observed in adult patients with neurological disorders. However, their detailed clinical spectrum and neuroimaging correlates have been rarely reported.[1,2]
Method: The study was conducted after approval from the Institutional Ethics Committee. It was an observational, cross-sectional study, over a period of 18 months at a tertiary care teaching institute in India. After taking their informed consent, we recruited 56 patients with neurological disorders presenting with repetitive behaviour.
Results: A total of 56 patients [Males: 30; Females: 26] [mean age + SD: 52.87+17.02] with repetitive behaviour were reported. Motor repetitive behaviours were most commonly observed finding in the form of simple stereotypy and the most common phenomenology was picking of clothes or items followed by rubbing movements. Among vocal repetitive behaviours, the most common phenomenology was palilalia. The most common etiology was ischemic stroke followed by haemorrhagic stroke and central nervous system infections. Based on the neuroimaging data the most common structures involved in our cohort was the parietal lobe followed by the frontal lobe and subcortical structures.
Conclusion: Repetitive behaviours are not uncommon in adults with neurological disorders and are frequently observed in patients with stroke and central nervous system infections.
