Intraoperative microelectrode recodings reveal functional structure of Globus Pallidus pars interna in dystonic patients

Objective: We characterized the functional structure of Globus pallidus pars interna (GPi) in dystonic patients by analizing the distribution of the firing pattern features in the volume of the nucleus.

Background: The GPi is a common target for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) in dystonic patients. It is hypothesized to have an internal structure but a link between the activity of neurons in different subregions and observed movement dysfunctions is still missing. This information will support a more effective target localization in DBS implants.

Method: We collected the microelectrode recordings MER acquired during DBS implant of dystonic patients. We defined a set of candidate biomarkers including first and second order firing statistic, regularity and bursting, and spectral properties. We determined the amount of information carried by these neural features about the location of the GPi first and the depth of the recordings within the GPi.

Results: We identified a small set of neural features acquired from MER that might support DBS target localization in and within the GPi. Thanks to the simultaneous acquisition of MER from multiple tracks we are able to provide a 3D characterization of neurons activity in GPi of dystonic patients.

Conclusion: MER can support characterization of clusters of activity within GPi.
