Category: Parkinson's Disease: Non-Motor Symptoms

Objective: We examined the prevalence of diverse sleep hygiene behavior and their associations with insomnia severity in PD patients. We examined the prevalence of diverse sleep hygiene behavior and their associations with insomnia severity in PD patients.

Background: Sleep hygiene refers to a list of behaviors, environmental conditions, and other sleep-related factors that can help improve insomnia as a stand-alone treatment or one of the multimodal treatment components for patients with insomnia. Although sleep hygiene is well known to patients with insomnia, it is unknown how patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) practice sleep hygiene in their daily lives. In addition, the relationship between sleep hygiene and insomnia severity among PD patients has rarely been examined.

Method: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted in the outpatient clinic of a movement disorder center. Patients were asked to complete sleep hygiene practice scale (SHPS-K), insomnia severity scale (ISI), Parkinson’s disease sleep scale (PDSS), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The SHPS included 30 items categorizing sleep hygiene practices into four domains, which are arousal-related behaviors, sleep scheduling and timing, eating/drinking behaviors, and sleep environment.

Results: In total, 47 participants with PD (23 men, 24 women; mean age, 69.8 ± 10.67 years) were enrolled. Significant positive correlations were found with SHPS, ISI, and PSQI, and PDSS-2 (p <0.05). Mean SHPS was significantly higher for the insomnia group than for the good sleeper group in PD patients. Among SHPS domains, behaviors interfering with homeostatic and/or circadian regulation showed significantly positive correlations with ISI.

Conclusion: This study might suggest a possibility of insomnia management through the improvement of sleep hygiene in PD patients, especially for behavior intervention to homeostatic and/or circadian regulation
