The change of heart rate variability after subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation in patients with Parkinson’s disease: A Meta⁃analysis

Meeting: 2018 International Congress

Abstract Number: 520

Keywords: Deep brain stimulation (DBS), Parkinsonism

Session Information

Date: Saturday, October 6, 2018

Session Title: Surgical Therapy: Parkinson's Disease

Session Time: 1:45pm-3:15pm

Location: Hall 3FG

Objective: To evaluate the changes of heart rate variability (HRV) after subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD).

Background: The effect of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation on heart rate variability in PD patients remains inconsistent.

Methods: Pertinent studies were identified in PubMed, EBMASE, Cochrane Library, VIP, Wan Fang and CNKI. The quality of included studies was evaluated by using Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. All data were pooled by RevMan 5.3 software for Meta⁃analysis. The fixed-effect or random-effect model was selected based on heterogeneity.

Results: We retrieved 27 articles, of which 6 studies with NOS score ≥ 5 were chosen. A total of 101 PD patients were included. Meta⁃analysis showed that in PD patients, compared with the state of before operation, the HRV after STN-DBS showed no statistically significant change in low-frequency power (LF, SMD = 0.04, 95%CI: ⁃ 0.24 ~ 0.32; P = 0.79), high-frequency power (HF, SMD = 0.15, 95%CI: ⁃ 0.13 ~ 0.43; P = 0.30), and LF/HF(SMD = 0.14, 95%CI: ⁃ 0.19 ~ 0.47; P = 0.42).

Conclusions: STN-DBS does not change heart rate variability of patients with PD. Further related trials are still urgently needed.
