Session Title: Parkinson's Disease: Non-Motor Symptoms

Session Time: 1:15pm-2:45pm

Location: Hall 3FG

Objective: We were conducting the research to determine the prevalence of the gastrointestinal symptoms in Parkinson’s disease patients in Bethesda Hospital, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, by using the “Non-Motor Symptom assesment scale for Parkinson’s Disease” score.

Background: Gastrointestinal symptoms are one of the non-motor symptoms that often occur in Parkinson’s disease. Those symptoms are also unrecognized by most of the patients in the early stage, therefore not considering those symptoms to be warning signs to any diseases, including Parkinson’s disease. The “Non-Motor Symptom assesment scale for Parkinson’s Disease” score can determine non-motor symptoms, which is including gastrointestinal symptoms.

Methods: The research is conducted with cross-sectional design within a period from January 2018 to March 2018, to Parkinson’s disease patients in Bethesda Hospital, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The sample was collected using consecutive sampling method. The patients data were measured using the “Non-Motor Symptom assesment scale for Parkinson’s Disease”, SF-8, and Hoehn-Yahr examination.

Results: Total subjects of 31 patients, with age distribution from 50 to 81 years old, were studied in this research. Most patients have approximately equal to 1 year duration of disease (51,61%), Hoehn & Yahr stage 3 (64,51%), and using combination therapy of levidopa-based and non-levidopa-based medication (54,83%). Most of the patients are experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms (54,83%), with the rate of each measured symptoms involuntary saliva dribbling (29,03%), diffcultiy of swallowing (6,45%), and constipation (41,93%)

Conclusions: Most of the Parkinson’s disease patients are having gastrointestinal symptoms, with the most frequent symptom of constipation
