Session Information

Date: Monday, June 20, 2016

Session Title: Education in movement disorders

Session Time: 12:30pm-2:00pm

Location: Exhibit Hall located in Hall B, Level 2

Objective: To translate and adapt the European Physiotherapy Guideline for Parkinson’s disease to Portuguese.

Background: In 2014 the European Guideline for Physiotherapy in Parkinson’s disease was published to support the judgements and decisions health professionals make during their clinical practice with people with Parkinson’s disease (pwp). Professional associations from 19 European countries joined their forces to develop this Guideline using AGREE and GRADE.

Methods: The Guideline (including the parts for pwp and physicians) was translated and adapted into Portuguese. First, a bilingual official Portuguese translator produced a first draft of the Portuguese version. This version was then revised by a panel consisting of 3 Physiotherapists (PT panel), Portuguese native speakers and experts in Parkinson’s disease. To assure quality and transparency of translation, the copyright holders of this Guideline and a member of the Guideline development group whose mother language was Portuguese were involved in all processes. Discrepancies were discussed and solved by this panel.

Results: All reviewers agreed with the final version and the Portuguese version of the European Physiotherapy Guideline for Parkinson’s disease was produced. Some suggestions included the need 1) to add some terms in European and Brazilian Portuguese to make the reading more friendly and understandable for both; 2) to remove some examples of activities such as shuffling snow since they might not be applicable in Brazil or Portugal; and 3) to add Portuguese versions of the scales. The overall translation process allowed us to recognize that: 1) it is vital that the review is done by a Parkinson-expertise panel to guarantee understanding; 2) when required, the translation should be adjusted to the population targeted and 3) the translation processes required close collaboration with the guideline copyright holders to ensure conceptual equivalence of the translation.

Conclusions: In order to support equal implementation of the guideline throughout Europe and other countries, translations are need. The translation of the European Physiotherapy Guideline for Parkinson’s disease to Portuguese is expected to provide practical help to ensure equal access for pwp to good quality and specialized care in Portugal and Brazil. The Portuguese version of the Guideline is available for downloading at www.parkinsonnet.info/euguideline and www.abneuro.org.br.
