Objective: To evaluate the possible protective effects of Boswellia dalzielii in animal model of Parkinson Disease (PD) induced by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) injection in the striatum
Background: L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) therapy is the most effective treatment for Parkinson’s disease, but with chronic L-DOPA administration, complications such as dyskinesia emerge. It has been shown that Boswellia dalzielii exert positive effects on motor dysfunction and brain oxidative stress, suggesting that it could potentially have protective effect on neurological damage caused by 6-OHDA injection.
Method: The animals were randomly assigned to sham, lesion (6-OHDA), and three lesion groups treated with extract of Boswellia dalzielii at different doses for 3 weeks. Then, neurotoxin 6-OHDA was microinjected into the left striatum to induce PD and motor behavior was assessed by rotational and elevated narrow beam tests. Oxidative stress markers were also measured in striatal and midbrain homogenates.
Results: Pretreatment with Boswellia dalzielii significantly decreased the number of rotations and significantly reduced the latency when compared with 6-OHDA group. The oxidative stress was also reduced following treatment with Boswellia dalzielii.
Conclusion: Our results suggest Boswellia dalzielii protects 6-OHDA-induced parkinsonism rats against oxidative stress and locomotor deficit.
