Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate and compare the non-motor symptoms and their correlation with quality of life in patients with PD and AP.
Background: The Non-Motor symptoms in Parkinson’s Disease (PD) have been well studied and documented worldwide. However, much less is known and documented about the Non motor symptoms in Atypical Parkinsonism(AP), where they are perhaps more severe and disabling.
Method: This single center, cross-sectional observational study enrolled 204 patients (155 PD, 27 probable/possible MSA, 22 probable/possible PSP) from a movement disorder clinic of a tertiary care hospital. Various scales were applied on patients such as the Modified Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) was used to measure disease severity and Movement Disorder Society (MDS)UPDRS part III was used to measure motor score. Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE) used for assessment of patients’ mental capabilities. The non-motor symptom scale (NMSS) was used to assess NMSs. QoL was evaluated by Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire-39 (PDQ-39) questionnaire.
Results: There were no statistically significant differences between both PD and APS groups within the parameters of gender, duration of disease. Disease severity and motor disability were worse in Atypical Parkinsonism (PSP>MSA) (p<0.001). The mean NMSS score was 23.7±27.9, 65.6±35.5 and 47.6 ± 41.3 in PD, MSA and PSP, respectively (p<0.05). MSA had higher scores for cardiovascular and sexual domain, PSP had higher scores for attention/memory domain.
Conclusion: Non Motor Symptoms were much more prevalent and severe among Atypical Parkinsonism patients (MSA > PSP > PD)
