Session Title: Surgical Therapy: Other Movement Disorders
Session Time: 1:45pm-3:15pm
Location: Hall 3FG
Objective: To elucidate the effect of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt surgery for the sleep of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus.
Background: Sleep Disturbance in Parkinson’s disease and its improvement after surgical therapy (i.e., DBS) are frequently reported. Sleep quality and effect of surgical therapy for other movement disorders is not clear.
Methods: We evaluated the baseline sleep quality of 12 patients (age: 74.8 ± 5.3 years; males: 6, females: 6) using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and ESS (Epworth Sleepiness Scale). Their sleep structure was monitored by polysomnography (PSG) before and two weeks after shunt surgery.
Results: Both PSQI and ESS score were within the normal range (5.3 ± 1.8 and 5.3 ± 3.7, respectively). However, PSG revealed fragmented sleep structure, which was improved after surgery. Among the sleep stage components, stage 2 increased significantly.
Conclusions: Sleep structure evaluated by PSG improved after CSF shunt surgery. To specify their sleep quality, we need some appropriate battery addressing nocturnal bladder symptoms.
