Meeting: 2016 International Congress

Abstract Number: 829

Keywords: Non-motor Scales, Parkinsonism

Session Information

Date: Tuesday, June 21, 2016

Session Title: Parkinson's disease: Pathophysiology

Session Time: 12:30pm-2:00pm

Location: Exhibit Hall located in Hall B, Level 2

Objective: To compare motor and non-motor symptoms (NMS) in white Caucasian (WC) and Asian patients with Parkinson’s disease (PwP) living in the UK as well as ‘Asian’ cohorts living in Bangkok, Thailand and Kolkata, India.

Background: Published evidence suggests a higher rate of atypical parkinsonism in UK resident non-white (black and minority ethnic) PwP (Ray Chaudhuri et al., 2000). Comparisons between WC and non-white subjects resident in their country of origin have never been reported before.

Methods: This is a multicenter cross–sectional survey including centers which are part of the IPMDS Non Motor Study Group network. Each patient confirmed with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease underwent standardized motor and non-motor assessments using validated tools.

Results: In this ongoing study, data from 68 WC PwP (70.6% male, mean age 67.8±12.1 years, mean disease duration 6.6±5.6 years, median Hoehn and Yahr (HY) 2 (range 1-5)), 15 UK-Asian PwP (73.3% male, mean age 62.2±12.9 years, mean disease duration 6.9±5.9 years, median HY 2 (range 1-4)), 46 East Indian PwP from Kolkata (80.4% male, mean age 64.2±8.9 years, mean disease duration 7.2±5.3 years, median HY 2 (range 1-4)) and 40 Thai PwP from Bangkok (70% male, mean age 60.1±9.8 years, mean disease duration 8.6±4.8 years, median HY 2 (range 1-4)) are presented. Asian-UK and Indian PwP had higher Non Motor Symptoms Scale (NMSS) total scores whereas scores were lower in Thai PwP compared to WC. WC PwP reported higher alcohol and caffeine consumption.

Conclusions: In this first ever cross-sectional comparative study of NMS profiles between resident Asian and UK WC/Asian PwP, differences in NMS profiles as well as socio-demographic issues are reported. In part this might be driven by scores on the domains sleep, mood/cognition and attention/memory of NMSS.
